Are You Ready to DIY Your Roof? Here's Why The Answer May Be No

So You Think You Can Roof?

This isn't a new reality show on ABC-but it is a question you should ask yourself before you start ordering shingles to your home. DIY work on a large job such as roofing is something you really need to think about before you pull the trigger on that nail gun yourself.

Roofs Are Nuanced

Some people assume roofing is just spending your morning taking all the shingles off of the roof and the afternoon putting new shingles on and you'll be done by nighttime! This couldn't be further from the truth! A roof is a complex system of components that work together to keep water, snow, debris and anything else out side of your home. Contractors like the employees at C.H.I. Roofing are trained in every aspect of this part of the job. They can open up a roof and use their decades of experience to let you know what is really going on inside your home's foundation.

Be Ready To Sweat

How does carrying heavy objects up and down a ladder sound? Or schlepping them across the top of a roof? If this isn't your day to day work, it won't be fun. If you want to roof your home safe, you'll need a few knowledgable friends you can trust to help out. Honestly, best to pay professionals than worry about your friend Rick from work falling off the roof and suing you!

Save Up Front/Pay Later

At first you may think the price of paying a professional contractor like C.H.I. Roofing to handle your roof is much higher than simply buying the materials yourself, but one hiccup in your work timeframe and you'll be paying for a rush job to get your home roofed before another storm hits. When you pay a trusted contractor to rehab your roof you are paying for piece of mind. Your job will get done correct the first time.

Checking Your Windows for Leaks

Your windows are one of the most important pieces of your home at keeping the elements out of your house. Here's what you should do to check your window for leaks!

Having a leak in your window can not only get in the way of your heating and air conditioning system, but it can also leave your window open for permanent damage like dry rot.

An improperly installed window can lead to dry rot like this. If you find any leaks in your window, letting it go without repair can give you this result.

The upfront cost for repairing a window are minimal when compared to how much fixing a window in disrepair as the one show here. Whenever you have a gust of wind, check your window edges for any gusts. If you notice even small amounts of air leaking through, be assured there's even more than you can perceive. If you're looking to get your windows installed right the first time, C. H. I. Roofing is your destination for consulting and installation. C.H.I. uses windows from American Window and Glass. They come with the coveted Better Home & Garden Life time warranty.

Beautiful windows like this from American Window & Glass are expertly installed by C.H.I. Roofing

Damaged Roofing Can Give Squirrels Access to Your Home

As the tree leaves turn from green to yellow and brown, we see more and more squirrels scurrying around the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. In an effort to stockpile supplies for winter, these cute but scrappy critters are on the hunt for nourishment. What any homeowner will tell you is while squirrels may be a nice signal of fall, squirrels making a nest in your attic is a royal pain. Squirrels are constantly chewing to maintain their sharp teeth, and if their home is under your roof they will find any number of things to chew on. The cute critters are very comfortable around people and have been scanning the neighborhoods, roof by roof, looking for a place to make their winter hiding. Don't let your house be their next hotel!

There are a number of ways critters like squirrels (and also birds) can get into your home:

  • Gaps Between Gutters and Roofs

The Red Squirrel looking for gaps between your roof and gutter!

The edge of your roof where it connects to the gutter is a prime location for rain, leaves, and general outdoor substances to erode at your houses foundation. Even the smallest spaces between roof and gutter can be made big enough to give squirrels access to your attic. Frequent professional gutter cleanings paired with a trusted roofer like CHI can ensure your home doesn't become homes for uninvited wildlife.

  • Holes in Roof Ventilation

A Fox Squirrel scoping out your roof vents and chimney for a warm place to crash.

Most likely there are necessary ventilation pieces on the top of your home. After time weather can erode these pieces and leave light for squirrels to slide into. Proper maintenance and frequent visual checks of your roof's ventilation can ensure you have an air-tight defense against cute critters like the fox squirrel.

  • Uncapped chimneys

The Eastern Grey Squirrel cataloguing all the uncapped chimneys in your neighborhood.

If there is any space between your brick chimney outlet and your roof, squirrels will find a way in. Wear and tear is sometimes hard to keep track of as getting the ladder out and climbing up to your roof can be a tiresome chore. It's however necessary to keep track of your chimney's status.

Don't let your home house critters in the winter! They won't pay for the heating or construction bills after they leave!

Does Your Business Need A New Roof or Just Repair?

As a business owner, you want to cut costs whenever you can. The roof to your business can easily be overlooked amid the countless things you have to keep your business moving forward. Use this list to figure out if you need quick patchwork or a full re-roofing for your business's building.

The roof of your business is often the last thing on your mind. Every business owner has a long list of things they need to keep tabs on to maintain their business moving forward. Unfortunately, it usually takes a giant leak into the office before anyone takes a look at the structural integrity of your commercial roofing. Its the case with many businesses that you are inheriting someone else's work when it comes to the roof over your head. Follow these tips for seeing what kind of improvements your roof may need to avoid a costly emergency job:

 Small Repairs:

You should be able to clearly see pieces of your roofing that may just need small repairs, not an entire replacement. If you see a small rip or tear, but the membrane is still completely intact and the insulation inside the building, you can easily apply a quick fix to extend the life of your roof without breaking the bank. A quick fix is preferred when compared to a complete overhaul of your roof.

While this won't fix any tears, this can reinforce your roof for another couple of years depending on the service. Coating can give you a prolonged roof life without spending weeks having a crew rehab the entire roof.

Full Roof Re-Cover:

If your roof hasn't been previously re-covered and the membrane is not as intact as it should be, you could go for a second covering on your roof. It can give you another warranty extension and ensure you won't have any new leaks when a snowstorm hits. Also, construction won't be as invasive and disruptive to workflow in your company.

 Complete Roof Replacement:

If a quarter of your total room is damaged, you'll need to invest in a complete roof replacement. In the long run you'll save on energy, repairs,a dn if you ever want to sell you've just raised the property value of your building.

Great Reviews of Our Work! Add Your voice

Over half of our business at C.H.I. Roofing is repeating customers or referrals. How to Remove Snow & Ice From Your Roof

While the heat is still teasing the Cincinnati area, we all know that snow and ice is right around the corner. Snow and ice can take over your roof and it's important to keep tabs on how the accumulation of precipitation is sitting on your home.

Dangling and jagged icicles aren't just a danger to people, they could also be a hazard to your home. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and stops melting snow from draining off the roof. What happens is the water will start to backup underneath the shingles and will eventually get into the interior of your home.

To remove ice DIY, there are roof salt products that can help to thaw the ice. Avoid using salt or calcium chloride to melt the snow off the roof as they are super corrosive and can also damage grass and tress if they come in conatct.

You can also setup your roof with gutter screens to keep debris, water, and ice from building up in your gutter.

If you'd like to remove snow you can get a roof rake that you can use from the ground.

If you feel like the snow and ice has gotten to much to handle on your roof or you're worried there may be damage, call 513-731-ROOF for a free no risk consultation!

Increasing the Value of Your Home

The curb appeal of your home is greatly increased with a new roof. Cincinnati area numbers show a new roof can increase the value of your home on average by $14,000.

According to this study from Remodeling Magazine installing a brand new roof can increase the value of your home by $14,214. Depending on the price of your roofing job, you can recoup the costs of your roof by up to 70%! By investing into a new roof you can ensure at the very least your resale value will go up on your home.

Utility Costs

Then there is also the money you will save on heating and cooling. Installing a new roof will keep the heat inside when its cold outside and keep the cool inside when it's hot outside. The money you'll save on your utilities will be more than worth the amount of money you paid up front for your new roof.

Lifetime Warranty

Many roofs installed over the last 30 years only came with a 5-15 year warranty. Current roofing materials espescially the ones that C.H.I Roofing uses come with lifetime warranties that will last the lifetime of your house.

A new shade of roofing and shingles can greatly improve the color palette and look of your home. Make the view from the street POP when you have that brand new roofing.

Inspecting Your Roof After A Storm

The rainy season is upon us in the Cincinnati area, and as much as we'd love for everyone to have a perfect roof with no leaks or issues, we know from our day to day operations that's just not the case. Unless you've got your roof outfitted with care by the professionals at C.H.I. Roofing, there is a chance your roof won't be able to handle that next storm blowing through.

                                                                                            Storm clouds rain cincinnnati
After the sky stops looking like this, it's time to inspect your roof!
Checklist for Roof Inspection After A Storm
1) Check out the Attic!
Before you put on your rain boots and slog outside, head upstairs to your home's attic. One of the obvious indicators of damage from the storm will be puddles of water on the floor or slivers of sunlight peeking through your ceiling. If you find either of these, call 731-ROOF to get our staff on-site as soon as possible to discuss tackling this issue. Your home is an important family investment and you need piece of mind it will be secure.
Even picturesque attics like this one can succumb to storm damage!
2) Pull out the Ladder and Check the Roof!
After you've checked your internal features, take a few minutes to head outside and (safely) climb up to inspect your roof and gutters up close.  Any obvious damage should be visible with the naked eye after a storm.
If you can, try and pry your children off their video games for a moment to check out the roof! Double check their findings to be sure ;)
Check the gutters for any standing water or piles of leaves. Unclog any issues if you're able to. Check for any places where the gutters and roof have separated, as that can quickly lead to a space for the elements and animals to find their way in. In general look at the rest of the roof for dislodged shingles, gaps, tears, or any other unsightly issues.
3) Call 731-ROOF
C.H.I. wants to help keep your home secure from all that mother nature can throw at it. If you see any sign of damage we are here for you.

Tips to Winterize Your Home

The snow is just around the corner in southern Ohio. As we get closer to December we will have snowfall shortly. Here are some tips for making sure your home is ready for the winter months! C.H.I. Roofing can handle most of your big home repairs, but these are easy tricks to make sure you keep your home in good standing.

Caulk It Up!

If you see any gaps in siding or windows, apply some caulk form the hardware store. You can do this inside too. Buying a caulk gun for home use is a great tool to have year round.

Keep Your Thermostat Low!

You can save as much as 1% on your energy bill for every degree you lower your thermostat during the winter. If you can, program the thermostat to be very low or off when no one is home and keep it lower than last year's usual temp!

Weatherstrip Tape

Drafts and air leaks increase your heating costs so it's important to inspect your windows and doorways to ensure there aren't any open spaces. Weatherstripping tape is cheap and easy to apply.

Draft Guards

Draft guards are also for keeping the bottom of your doors from letting air in. They're very cheap and easy to install.

Replace Filters

One thing that always gets forgotten about is replacing the filters in your HVAC system.

While handling these winter precautions if you notice any bigger issues with your home call 513-731-ROOF and C.H.I. Roofing can help you

Top Questions to Ask Before You Hire A Siding Contractor

There are new home improvement contractors turning up everyday in Cincinnati. If you end up needing new siding on your home, there's a few questions you need to ask before you hire someone to redo the siding on your home.

1-How Many Years Has This Company Been in Business?

There are lots of construction companies opening and closing every year. You don't want to be stuck calling back a contractor a few months after they complete a job only to find them dissolved. Sure, everyone needs to start somewhere but try and keep them from trying on your home!

2-Do They Specialize in Siding?

Is this company one of those "do it all" type of places? Is that because they can do everything just good enough and not specialize in any one type of construction? Make sure they have a history of doing this kind of work and they can show you proof.

3-Are They Certified?

You want a contractor that has gone out of their way to make sure they're educated in the best ways to install the siding you purchase.

4-Are They Licensed and Insured?

While it's always a positive to support, small, local businesses, you also cannot trust a makeshift crew with no insurance or licensure!

5-Are They Local?

Local businesses are best for keeping money in your local economy and also the fact that they are local means there will be faster turn around with meetings, and finishing the job.

6-Have They Completed Similar Projects to Yours?

If they don't have much experience with the kind of job you are looking to get finished, find someone who does!

7-Are They Able to Provide References?

Any good business should have a stable of positive references they can help you get access to. If not, there's probably a reason why!

C.H.I. Roofing's Answers:

What to Look for When Hiring A Home Improvement Contractor

Like many things your average household isn't an expert at: auto repair, medical services, or investments; getting a contractor you can trust to fix your home can be intimidating at first. Industry jargon and aggressive sales people can try to leverage the knowledge gap between contractor and consumer as an excuse to gouge prices or brush off any concerns you may have with a pending repair. CHI prides itself on respecting its customers and giving a fair, honest price for the work. Here's a few things to keep in mind when finding a home improvement contractor.

  1. Don't Play Price Games

Some contractors like to start with an over the top bid and whittle it down from there, hoping you'll take the bait at a cost way higher than you should have to pay. If your contractor isn't able to give you a quote on paper after the first look at your place, start to think about reaching out to another business. CHI Roofing gives you the estimated cost upfront. Our collective decades of experience in the industry gives us an expert's idea of what the job should cost and what the timeframe should be. Unexpected things can arise once the job starts, sometimes you find much bigger issues once you peel a roof off a building, but trust that CHI will be honest and upfront about those costs and the effect on your home.

      2. Check the Certifications

If your contractor suggests a certain manufacturer of roofing, siding, windows, or anything else, make sure they are certified to install that material to the manufacturer's specifications. For example, CHI Roofing frequently uses GAF Roofing materials. CHI is GAF Master Certified. Our employees know the optimum way to install your roof with the skills to ensure it lasts the lifetime of your home.

     3. Be Mindful of Online Reviews

One of the better means to get insight on a potential contractor is websites like Better Business Bureau, Angie's List, Yelp, & Home Advisor. CHI Roofing has been certified with the BBB 5 years running and our reviews on the other sites are overwhelmingly positive.

After you've checked out what you need with a contractor, we know you'll find CHI Roofing fits exactly what you need. Call 513-731-ROOF for a free no risk consultation today!
